An Apology

apologize to your body

maybe

that’s where the healing begins.

— starting

poem from salt. by nayyirah waheed.

I’m deeply sorry

for failing to see

your strength.

For shaming you

both silently

and out loud.

For filling you with poison

because that made it easier

to put on a happy face.

I’m sorry

for not listening to you

when you needed rest.

Even when

you were screaming at me

to slow down.

Please forgive me

for taking you for granted.

For obsessing over

your “flaws”

instead of being in awe

of your power

and beauty.

And

for taking so long

to recognize

that you are

my home.
